How We Review
Our methodology, scoring rubric, and the Japanese Difficulty scale — published in full so you can judge our judgments.
Our Method
Every review starts with the Japanese original. We play or read the full work in Japanese — not a machine-translated build — and complete all main routes or content before writing. Reviews are written by a native Japanese reader living in the doujin scene's home market.
What makes us different is the interpretive layer. For each work we research how it was actually received in Japan: DLsite reviews, Ci-en posts, and community discussion. We translate representative opinions (briefly quoted, always with source attribution) and — more importantly — explain the context an English-speaking reader would miss: genre codes, dialect nuance, circle history, and what Japanese buyers consider praiseworthy or disappointing. That analysis appears in every review as the Japanese Reception section and the Interpreter's Note.
We buy the works we review. When a work was received as a review copy or when any affiliate relationship exists, it is disclosed on the page. Affiliate commissions never influence scores — our rubric is published below precisely so you can hold us to it.
The Japanese Difficulty Scale
The single most common question overseas buyers ask is “can I enjoy this without Japanese?” Store pages rarely answer honestly. Our Lv.1–5 scale does:
| Level | What it means |
|---|---|
| Lv.1No JP needed | Fully playable with zero Japanese. Official English version exists, or gameplay is entirely visual (pixel action, ASMR audio where words don't matter). |
| Lv.2Menu-level JP | You only need to recognize menu kanji (save, load, settings). Story is skippable or minimal. A screenshot translator covers everything comfortably. |
| Lv.3Texthooker OK | Story matters, but standard tools (Textractor + DeepL, OCR overlay) make it fully enjoyable. Expect some friction in fast scenes. |
| Lv.4JP helps a lot | Wordplay, dialect, or dense text. Machine translation loses significant nuance — playable but you will miss part of what makes it great. |
| Lv.5Native nuance | The work's core value lives in untranslatable Japanese (voice acting nuance, literary prose, puns). We flag this honestly rather than overselling. |
For manga and CG collections, the rating reflects dialogue density and kanji difficulty rather than gameplay friction.
Scoring Rubric
The overall score (0–100) weighs 4–5 category scores chosen per format — e.g. Story / Art / H-Content / Gameplay / Value for games; Audio Quality / Script / Voice Acting / Value for ASMR. Category weights are stated implicitly by what the review spends words on; the bands below tell you how to read the number:
Masterpiece
Excellent
Good
Decent
Mixed
Skip
We use the full scale. A 70 is genuinely good — not a polite failure. Reader mini-reviews are displayed separately and never averaged into the editorial score.
What We Don't Cover
We maintain a strict exclusion policy: works depicting minors or using known euphemisms for such content are never indexed, reviewed, or accepted through reader submissions — enforced by a server-side denylist at every entry point. All reviewed works feature adult characters only. Read the full policy, including our quotation and copyright standards, on the Content Policy page.
